Magwort & the Master

Magwort and the Master

by
Michael L. McCoy

A Greek historian named Xenophon lived and wrote 2,400 years ago. Xenophon traveled with the troops commanded by Cyrus the Younger of Persia. One of Xenophon’s writings is titled Cyropaedia, an account of Cyrus the Great’s education, discipline, doctrine and practice. Within that work is a description of how Cyrus prepared his army for war. The Greek word for meek or gentle (πραεῖς) is used twice in one paragraph in which the training of soldiers and horses is described:

“Cyrus also did this, he never let them go to the morning meal or to supper without having sweated. He led them on hunts for a sweat or he would devise games for a sweat, and again, if he had some business or other, he conducted it so they would not come back without sweating. He thought this beneficial to their meals, to their health and to their enduring affliction, for he considered hardships beneficial to their being long-suffering (meek) to one another, just as horses that endure miseries with one another stand more gently (meek) together. In any event, those who share the knowledge that they are well drilled are more noble in combat.” [ 2.1.29 ]

Magwort and the Master (2002) is a children’s book for grown-ups and a grown-ups’ story for children. The book follows the Gospel accounts of our Lord’s Life, Death, Crucifixion and Resurrection. While telling the Good News of salvation by the grace of God through faith in Christ, it gives the Biblical understanding of “meekness,” which is quite different from the world’s relatively negative perception of this virtue.

Below is a 28-minute audio recording of the 32-page book plus three readings from Scripture, the Lord’s Prayer, the Benediction and a few musical selections. It might be deemed appropriate for use as a bed-time story.

Frederick Kuegele

Book of Devotion: The Psalms

by Pastor Frederick Kuegele (1846-1916)

On Easter evening, the crucified and risen Savior, Jesus the Christ said to two of His disciples: “These are My Words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance unto the forgiveness of sins should be preached in His Name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem” (Luke 24:44-47). Along with the New Testament, the Old Testament is a Christ book. Jesus declared that the Psalms were about Him. They bear witness to Christ – Who He is and what He has come to do so that we could be forgiven, have eternal life and be saved.

In this 1895 work, Pastor Frederick Kuegele has pointed us to Christ with his devotions on the Psalms. After the information on a pdf copy to read/download and on the bound copy, the audio recording of the individual devotions follow.

Genesis 1-5

In The Whole Christian Doctrine in Genesis 1-5, Pastor Zorn presents the Scriptural basis for this reality. After all, Moses was (and is) a Christian. For he regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward (Hebrews 11:26).

In the preface Zorn wrote:

“Luther and all truly orthodox theologians recognize and testify that the Old Testament reveals Christ, that the whole Christian doctrine is taught in it, even though the glorious light of the New Testament was not yet shining. They agree perfectly with the great Apostle Paul who testified before Agrippa and the Roman governor, Festus: I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: that Christ should suffer, and that He should be the first that would rise from the dead, and should show light unto the people, and to the Gentiles” (Acts 26:23).

A Last Apostolic Word

The entire title of this 1925 work by Carl Manthey Zorn is A Last Apostolic Word to All Faithful and Righteous Servants of the Word – 2 Tim. 4, 1-5. This was primarily addressed to servants of the Word (including pastors, professors, missionaries, synodical presidents, etc.) However, and this is really to be stressed, all Christians should listen to and/or read this work. The Last Apostolic Word addresses what is recorded in The Holy Scriptures, which are intended for every one. The Christian laity should have a clear knowledge as to who is a faithful and righteous servant of the Word and what he is to do. Click on the line below for the audio recording of this book.

Music for Hymns

The hymns listed below are especially presented here for many purposes: 1.) for those times when a pastor has no organist; 2.) for group singing; 3.) for family devotions; 4.) for personal meditation; and so on. The music for all hymns is in the public domain. The musician is Sheryl Chissum, the organist here at Faith Lutheran Church. She has graciously allowed us to include her playing in this web page, doing so for you and for others throughout the world. We thank God for her and appreciate her service.

Once again, please check these out before using them in the Divine Service. The numbers in the parentheses (x) indicates the number of stanzas in the hymn. If you find any errors, please let me know. Thank you. Pastor McCoy
